About this policy

Oz Green is an energy comparison and sign-up service operated by Ozgreen Australia ("Oz Green", "we", "us" or "our"). We help you compare electricity and gas plans from a selection of energy retailers and, if you choose a plan, we pass your application to that retailer.

We are bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how you can access or correct it or make a complaint.

The information we collect

Depending on how far you go through our comparison and sign-up journey, we may collect:

  • Contact details — your name, phone number, email address and mailing address.

  • Property and energy details — the supply address, your National Meter Identifier (NMI) or gas meter number (MIRN), meter and network tariff details, whether the property has solar or a controlled load, your household size and your energy usage.

  • Application details — your date of birth, whether you own or rent the property, whether you are moving in, your preferred connection date and how you would like to receive bills.

  • Identification details — the type of identification document you provide, its number and related details, so the retailer can verify your identity.

  • Concession details — your concession card type, number and expiry, if you ask for a concession to be applied.

  • Business details — if you are signing up a business, its name, ABN or ACN, business type and a contact person.

  • Life support information — whether anyone at the property relies on life support equipment. This is health information; we only ask for it so the equipment can be registered correctly, and we collect it with your consent.

  • Technical information — your IP address, browser and device type, and the date and time you gave your consent, which we record as evidence of your application.

How we collect it

We collect most information directly from you, when you use our website or speak with our team.

When you enter a supply address, we also look up the meter at that address in the energy market’s records (through our retail partners) to find its network, meter type and tariff. This lets us show the plans and prices available for your property.

Addresses you type are completed using Google’s address lookup service, which receives the text you enter into the address field.

Why we collect it

We use your personal information to:

  • show you the energy plans and prices available for your property;

  • prepare your application and send it to the retailer you choose;

  • allow the retailer to verify your identity and, where it applies, check your credit;

  • keep a record of the offer you were shown and the consents you gave;

  • contact you about your comparison or application;

  • handle questions and complaints; and

  • meet our legal and regulatory obligations.

If you do not provide the information we ask for, we may not be able to show you accurate prices or complete your application.

Who we share it with

We share your personal information only as needed for the purposes above:

  • with the energy retailer whose plan you choose, so it can set up your account. The retailer handles your information under its own privacy policy, including when it verifies your identity with the document issuer or official record holder, or runs a credit check;

  • with service providers who help us run our business, such as website hosting, email and address lookup providers, who may only use it to provide their services to us; and

  • with regulators, energy ombudsmen, courts or law enforcement where the law requires or allows it.

We do not sell your personal information.

Some of our service providers, such as Google’s address lookup service, may store or process information outside Australia. Where we use them, we take reasonable steps to make sure your information is handled in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Marketing

We will only send you marketing about energy offers if you have agreed to it or the law otherwise allows it. You can opt out at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any message or by calling us on 1800 011 174.

How we protect and keep it

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, change or disclosure.

Identification document and concession card numbers are stored encrypted. They are used only to pass to your chosen retailer, and are not shown again when an application is reopened from its link.

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy or to meet our legal obligations. After that, we destroy it or de-identify it.

Cookies and website data

Our website uses cookies and your browser’s session storage to remember your comparison while you move between pages.

Once you choose a plan, we save your application on our systems as you fill it in, so your progress is not lost and you or our team can pick it up again from the link shown on the page. Anyone with that link can open the application, so please keep it private.

Accessing and correcting your information

You can ask us for the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete. We will respond within a reasonable time, and we will not charge you for making a request. If we cannot give you access, we will tell you why.

Making a complaint

If you are concerned about how we have handled your personal information, please contact us using the details below. We will acknowledge your complaint and aim to resolve it within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) on 1300 363 992 or at www.oaic.gov.au.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always available on this page, with the date it was last updated.
